Monkey Business is back!

Celebrating intersectional feminism

Exactly nine months ago I wrote my last blog entry. Nine months in which I neglected this baby. And so many worldwide events rocked the news and my life.

Although 2017 was a challenging, nasty year in which hate, prejudice, and war were ever rampant, it was also the year that ignited conversations on gender equality, female empowerment, and intersectionality at local and global scales; a year of collective decisions and actions to come together and fight the status quo.

More and more women began sharing their stories as well as some men, and society actually listened and paid heed. Protests were organized and consequences for the abusers were demanded. Accountability became a real thing. Time’s Up and #MeToo gave voice to the voiceless and made attempts at standing alongside every survivor.

Voicing the truth does not make it any less uncomfortable, yet it is paramount to hear it, to recognize it, to encourage it, to act on it. Moreover, it is vital to stand in sisterhood and support each other through hard times as well as cheer each other on in the good ones.

This is why this 2018 I have decided to resume the ‘Accomplished & Underrated Women Series’, and in so doing, portray our contemporary and historical strong, badass females. There is a need to reminisce these trailblazers who faced obstacles head-on, were revolutionary, and can be so inspiring for girls and boys. It is my turn to celebrate girl power!

Accordingly, today on British feminist writer Virginia Woolf’s birthday, I revive this blog with the objective of planting my seed of empowerment. Her words, “Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind”, should serve as compass for all.
